The city of Sioux Falls has flipped on the first of four pilot projects testing new energy-saving streetlights. The light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, began illuminating part of the Lake Lorraine development in western Sioux Falls last week. The lights can cost three times as much as typical high-pressure sodium streetlights, but they use less than half the energy. The city annually spends about $1.1 million to power its 1,800 streetlights.
